Hayes Dairy Farm
Mr. Thomas Hayes is the owner of a Fultonville, 65 cow dairy farm. His high electricity bills prompted him to look for opportunities to cut costs in his farming operations. He found that significant energy savings can be achieved in dairy farming due to the long operational hours of equipment and lighting.

Two energy conservation measures were identified that would reduce electricity usage – installing a variable speed milk pump and long-day fluorescent lighting in the barn.
The State provided technical support and product information to make informed decisions on equipment purchases. A consultant helped to evaluate the proper equipment for the milk processing operations and installed the equipment and lighting. Mr. Hayes received a 75 percent reduction in the total cost of the energy conservation measures through grants and incentives.

Mr. Hayes has already noticed cost savings, and a number of indirect benefits. He is getting better quality milk and as result is receiving a better price for his product. Also, the variable speed drive on the milk pump is quieter than the previous pump.
