The Stevens Farm

Mr. Craig M. Stevens, a farmer in Fort Plain, received an energy audit that identified a number of measures to improve the efficiency of his farming operations. These measures included the installation of variable speed drives on vacuum pumps, the installation of two new scroll compressors, and the retrofitting of current lighting.

Implementation of the recommended energy efficient measures at this Montgomery County dairy farm reduced its electrical bill by about $300 a month. As a result of the audit’s evaluation of the entire farm operation, Mr. Stevens has stopped storing hay in the Harvestore silos, which required electricity to unload and transfer the silage. Instead, the hay is now stored in white plastic tubes in the field, eliminating the need for mechanical transportation to the silos.

Financing for the project combined utility and State grants with a low-interest loan from the State.  Mr. Stevens expressed satisfaction with the program, noting that “the saving objectives far exceeded those listed under the grant. I was able to receive financial stability in my operation due to the energy audit and implementation of program.”
